Sadolin PV67 Heavy Duty Varnish USES Clear protective interior varnish for use on timber floors, bar tops and other timbers where a very hard wearing finish is required. Forms a very strong surface film, with good resistance to mild acids, alkalis and alcohols. It is slip and scratch resistant, and protects against abrasion and impact damage. Properties COMPOSITION Two component acid-catalysed lacquer consisting of a modified urea formaldehyde/alkyd polymer dissolved in a special mixture of solvents. COATING SYSTEM Sadolin PV67 Varnish (two component) should be applied as a three coat system. Pine with a large amount of heartwood may acquire a reddish tinge from acid-catalysed lacquers. This may be prevented by applying a first coat of PV67 Sealer followed by two subsequent coats of PV67 Varnish (two component). Where a coloured finish is required, PV67 Varnish may be applied over one coat of Sadolin Classic or similar low build woodstain (see preparation section). PV67 Varnish should not be applied to conventional single-pack varnishes, either water-borne or solvent-borne. If in any doubt about the nature of the existing finish, it must be completely removed back to clean, bright timber and then treated as “New timber”. FINISH Satin or gloss finish As with most coatings, the final appearance is dependent on a number of factors, including the timber species, colour and cut, and the presence of any existing coating. A trial application is strongly recommended prior to the commencement of work. COVERAGE RATE 10-12 m2/litre on smooth planed timber. This figure is intended as a guide. The actual coverage will vary depending upon the method of application, timber species, surface condition and the presence of previous coats. PV67 Varnish can be applied by brush, short-pile roller (e.g Lambs wool or mohair) or other suitable applicator. DRYING TIME (@20ºC/65%RH) First coat: Touch dry : 30 minutes Recoatable: 11/2 to 2 hours Subsequent coats: Recoatable : 2 to 4 hours Note: Minimum recommended application temperature 18°C. Drying times are dependent upon absorption and drying conditions. Conditions for application are critical to ensure the product will cure fully. Refer to “Conditions” in “Application” section. Do not expose the surface to heavy foot traffic for 8-10 hours after application; or introduce furniture for 24 hours; or install rugs for 1 week. VOLUME SOLIDS Approximately 50% Colour Range Colourless only Packaging/Can size PV67 Varnish (base and hardener) is available in: 15 litre base + 1.5 litre hardener. 5 litre base + 0.5 litre hardener. 1 litre base + 0.1 litre hardener. PV67 Sealer: 2.5 litre PV67 Thinner 1.0 litre General Information Apply all products in accordance with BS 6150: 1991 and BS 8000 : Part 12 : 1989 (see Standards section). Preparation GENERAL Timber surface must be suitably prepared, clean and dry, with dust, dirt, wax and grease removed. The timber should be allowed to acclimatise to its end-use environment. The moisture content should not exceed 14% prior to coating. BARE TIMBER Degrease any exposed bare timber surface by wiping with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits or Sadolin PV67 Thinner. Certain timber species contain high levels of natural wood extractives or exudates and some softwoods can be highly resinous. Resinous deposits should be removed with a scraper. Any remaining residues should be removed using a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits or PV67 Thinner, frequently changing the face of the cloth. Allow solvent to evaporate fully before overcoating. The use of both eye and hand protection is strongly advised. When filling, be sure to use fillers specifically designed for use with timber. General or all purpose fillers are not suitable, particularly on external areas, as they cannot cope with timber movement and work loose. Only use non-rusting screws, nails and fixings. Application CONDITIONS Do not apply when relative humidity is above 65% or when temperature is below 18°C (65°F). If there is any doubt regarding the level of humidity present, a de-humidifier should be used prior to, during and immediately after application of PV67 Varnish (two-component). There must be good ventilation at ground level during and after application.Where air circulation is poor, we recommend the use of electric fans to assist air movement. Do not direct draughts at the surface. Failure to meet these requirements may adversely affect the drying, visual quality and durability of the varnish. For the best results the room should be dust free. INITIAL PROCEDURE Ensure product is thoroughly stirred before and during application, otherwise sheen variations may be experienced. Note: Once the two components of the varnish have been mixed, the product can be stored in a closed container below 20°C and remains usable for up to 24 hours, however we strongly recommend only mixing sufficient material for individual coats at any one time. PV67 Varnish (two component) is mixed in the ratio of 1 part hardener to 10 parts varnish base by volume. The varnish/hardener mixture must be thoroughly shaken immediately prior to use. As the hardener contains acid,mixing should only take place in suitable vessels (either that provided, in the case of the 15 litre, or a plastic, glass or undamaged enamel vessel). The PV67 Sealer is supplied ready for use and should not be mixed with any other component of the PV67 Varnish system. APPLYING THE PRODUCT PV67 Varnish should be applied in a full flowing even coat, using a clean, good quality brush. Avoid overbrushing as this may produce brush marks and result in a reduction in the quality of finish and the level of protection afforded. PV67 Varnish may also be applied with a mohair applicator (e.g. roller). If an applicator is used the first coat of varnish may be thinned up to 10% by volume using Sadolin PV67 Thinner to aid application. The first coat of varnish should be lightly sanded when dry, using a fine grade abrasive paper, and the dust removed before application of the second coat. Further sanding is not necessary. CLEANING EQUIPMENT Brushes, tools etc. should be cleaned immediately after use with PV67 Thinner (or methylated spirits). If spilled, PV67 Varnish may be removed immediately while still wet using PV67 Thinner. STORAGE The containers should be resealed after use and stored tightly closed to prevent evaporation of the product and entry of air. Avoid the inclusion of a greater proportion of air to the product. It should be noted that even if there is a higher proportion of product to air in the container, once opened the shelf life of the product is unpredictable. Store in cool, dry, frost-free conditions, away from direct heat, sparks or flames, foodstuff or animal fodder. Care and maintenance of floors coated with Sadolin PV67 & Varnish MAINTENANCE OF EXISTING COATINGS PV67 Varnish treated floors must not be cleaned with wax polishes, strong detergents or caustic soda. A clean down with mild detergent and water is all that is required. Do not flood the surface with water. The surface should then be buffed with a dry cloth or mop to restore the sheen. Acrylic emulsion ‘dressings’ may be applied as necessary to improve abrasion resistance, restore shine and help to cover minor scratches. Follow manufacturer’s instructions. If maintenance becomes necessary, the surfaces should be lightly sanded with a fine grade abrasive paper. Remove all dust completely and apply one coat of PV67 Varnish (two component). It is possible to maintain small areas of worn varnish by ‘feathering’ the maintenance coat into the surrounding varnish after using a fine grade abrasive paper to prepare the surface. Coatings in a poor condition should be removed completely. Emulsion dressings must be removed before maintaining with PV67 Varnish.
