How to keep your
wood floor looking good
Bonakemi Maintenance Products - Bona – the specialists in products for
installation, surface treatment and
cleaning and maintenance of parquet
and wooden floors.
Our mission as a company is to bring out
the best in wooden floors. We offer flooring
contractors a full range of products to
enable them to do this. Apart from the
products shown inside this pamphlet. Bonakemi
Maintenance Products - the Bona range includes
floor finishes, oils, abrasives, adhesives,
sanding machines. Everything you need to
obtain a superb result.
When the finish has just dried
A floor coated with any of Bona’s floor finishes is usually
dry to touch within 1 to 3 hours. But the floor finish is
still ‘curing’ at this stage. As a rule, wait 8 hours after
the application of the top coat before walking into the
room.

Basic regular cleaning
With Bonakemi Maintenance Products - It isn’t hard to keep your wood floor attractive year
after year. Floors treated with Bona floor finishes require
the minimum of maintenace. By following the simple
guidelines in this booklet, you will help to keep your
wood floor looking good for years. A range of Bona
products are available for cleaning and care. They are
specially made for use on a wood floor treated with a
surface finish.

Removing dirt and marks
With Bonakemi Maintenance Products - Dust and grit can be removed with a vacuum cleaner
but your floor will need a more thorough clean from
time to time. BonaKemi has developed a cleaning
agent called Bona Parkett Cleaner especially for wood
floors and melamine laminated floors.

Bona Parkett Cleaner has been
specially formulated for the
cleaning of wooden floors treated
with a surface finish. It is also
suitable for melamine laminated
floors.
For extra protection
Although your wood floor is already well protected with
a surface finish, a coat of Bona Freshen Up is a good
way to give extra protection to a newly-finished floor.
Freshen Up is a ready-to-use maintenance product
designed for the maintenance of both commercial and
domestic areas. It revives a scratched and dull surface
giving a newly finished look and continuing protection
against wear.
In contrast to floors treated with polish or wax, floors
maintained with Freshen Up can be easily renovated
with a new coat of floor finish without having to be
sanded back to bare wood. Carefully remove the
Freshen Up with Bona Polish Remover and then make
a light sanding before you put on the new coat of floor
finish.

Before Bona Freshen Up is applied for the first time on a newlyfinished
floor, wait one or two weeks after the finish has been
applied. Clean the floor thoroughly. The floor must be clean
and free from polish and wax. Apply a thin coat of Freshen Up.
Use a clean cloth, sponge, mop or similar. In commercial
buildings two coats are recommended. You can walk on the
floor after about half an hour, when Freshen Up is dry.
Repeat the treatment with Freshen Up as necessary. For
floors in homes once or twice a year is usually enough. Floors
exposed to very heavy wear may need to be treated once or
more a month.
Bona FreshenUp is specially designed
for wood floors treated with
a floor finish. It is suitable for floors
in both homes and commercial
buildings. 1 litre of Freshen Up
should be enough for 60-70 sq.m
per coat.
To remove Bona Freshen Up
Each time Freshen Up is applied, layers of Freshen
Up are step by step built up. After a number of
applications, the surface may start to look unattractive.
Then it is time to remove the Freshen Up with Bona
Polish Remover. In a home you may only have to do
this once every few years, but in a busy building where
Freshen Up is applied more frequently, you may have
to do this more often.

Mix 1 litre of Bona Polish Remover with 5 litres of water.
By hand: Apply evenly to the surface with a cloth or sponge
and leave for a few minutes.
By machine: Apply with a combimachine equipped with filter
brushes or a red nylon pad. Leave for a few minutes.

Afterwards it is essential to go over the floor with clean water.
By hand: Wash off the floor using a damp cloth or wet sponge.
By machine: Wash off the floor using a combimachine.
Keep the amount of water to a minimum as it can penetrate
into the wood and cause swelling.
Bona Remover
For removing Bona Freshen Up as
well as Bona Parkett Polish and
many other makes of polish. It can
also be used for the removal of scuff
marks (after diluting one cap of
Remover with 100 ml of water).
Parkett Cleaner Parkett Cleaner is a neutral detergent, pH 6-8, designed specifically for use on sealed wooden floors and melamine laminate floors. Application Remove dust/grit etc using a vacuum cleaner, scissor mop or other dry cleaning method. Assess the condition of the floor and dilute the Parkett Cleaner as required. On large floors machine cleaning using either a scrubber/drier or a spray buff system is the most suitable method. Smaller floors may be cleaned using a mop or well wrung out cloth. N.B. Features - Restores sheen
- Can be easily removed to allow additional applications of lacquer
Freshen Up is a ready to use Bonakemi Maintenance Products designed for the maintenance of finished hardwood and other types of finished wooden floors. It revives a scratched and dull surface giving a newly finished look and continuing protection against wear. Freshen Up meets DIN norm 18 032 for slip resistance. N.B. Freshen Up cannot be used on floors, which have been treated previously with polish or similar maintenance products. Application Clean the floor as noted under Application in the Parkett Cleaner data. Apply Freshen Up evenly across the surface of the floor using a soft lint free cloth, mop or similar. Allow it to dry for approximately 30 minutes before replacing furniture, etc. It is not possible to ‘buff’ the floor to increase the sheen level. Freshen Up will restore the sheen of the original finish i.e. on a silk matt floor a sheen level similar to the initial silk matt appearance will be achieved. The use of Freshen Up on floors finished with Traffic will not increase the sheen level - the original matt look will be maintained. Cleaning of floors maintained with Freshen Up may be carried out using a neutral detergent solution, such as Parkett Cleaner, in combination with a normal cleaning programme. It is important that strongly alkaline cleaning agents are not used as they will remove Freshen Up. Additional applications should be made as necessary. For domestic floors once or twice each year should be sufficient. Floors exposed to very heavy wear will need to be treated more frequently, perhaps as often as once every few weeks. In contrast to floors treated with a polish or similar material a floor maintained with Freshen Up may be overcoated. Prior to the application of an additional application of lacquer the surface must be treated using Polish Remover. This will remove the Freshen Up. The floor should then be lightly sanded and the lacquer coat applied. Product Information Coverage 60-70 m2/litre Pack size 1 litre and 5 litre Shelf life / Storage 2 years in original sealed container. Store frost free away from direct sunlight, other sources of heat and foodstuffs. Store safely. Safety Detailed information is noted in the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheet. Information on the use of the product is noted on the label. Freshen Up is an unclassified product. Parkett Polish Parkett Polish is a water based polish specifically designed for use on sealed wooden floors to provide increased protection against wear and moisture. It should not be used on melamine laminate floors. Parkett Polish meets DIN 18 032 for slip resistance.
Application Clean the floor as noted under Application in the Parkett Cleaner data. Apply the Parkett Polish evenly across the surface of the floor using a soft lint free cloth or similar. On large areas a spray buff system may be more appropriate. Additional applications of the Parkett Polish should be made as required. It is possible to “spot” apply Parkett Polish to more heavily used areas on a floor rather than having to apply an additional application across the whole floor. Also for daily cleaning of well used floors Parkett Polish may be diluted at a rate of 0.2 litres to 5 litres of water. Over an extended period of time a build-up of Parkett Polish may occur. This may be removed by the use of Polish Remover or a slightly alkaline cleaner pH 9-10 together with a machine based cleaning system. Product Information Coverage 80 m2/litre per coat Pack size 1 litre and 5 litre Shelf life/Storage 2 years in original sealed container. Store frost free away from direct sunlight, other sources of heat and foodstuffs. Store safely. Safety Detailed information is noted in the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheet. Information on the use of the product is noted on the label. Parkett Polish is an unclassified product. Parkett Polish Remover Parkett Polish Remover is a concentrated liquid polish stripper designed to remove Parkett Polish. It may also be used to remove black heel marks etc.
N.B. Floors that have been treated previously with polish or similar must be sanded back to bare wood prior to overcoating. Application Apply the diluted product evenly across the floor using a mop or similar applicator. Wait for approximately 5 minutes to allow the solution to work. Clean the floor using a cleaning machine with a red pad or equivalent. Remove any surface contamination with a scrubber/drier, mop or similar. Finally clean the surface thoroughly using water. N.B. The amount of water applied to the floor must be kept to a minimum. It is important that all traces of Polish Remover are removed as any residue will act upon newly applied polish. Once the floor is dry Parkett Polish may be applied. To remove black heel marks apply the diluted product to the affected area. After several minutes wipe the surface using a clean soft lint free cloth. Product Information Dilution For removal of polish: 1 litre to 5 litres water For removal of heel marks: 1 cap to 100 ml water Pack size 1 litre and 5 litre Shelf life/Storage 2 years in original sealed container. Store frost free away from direct sunlight, other sources of heat and foodstuffs. Store safely. Safety Detailed information is noted in the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheet. Information on the use of the product is noted on the label. Polish Remover is an unclassified product. For the safe and easy cleaning of finished wooden floors, containing: Mophead and pole, Hardwood floor cleaner and an instruction booklet. Also available, a shrink wrapped wood floor wipe kit containing: Parkett Cleaning Mop (with cloth and one piece handle), Swedish Formula cleaner and an instruction booklet. BonaKemi Maintenance Guide During 70 years of experience working with wooden floors BonaKemi has recognised that there are four distinct areas to be addressed when preparing specifications for the finishing of new floors or floors subject to refurbishment: Preventative Maintenance The installation of an effective matting system can often be one of the most important factors in the long term performance of a floor. A system should be designed to allow grit/dirt and moisture to be removed. This is often achieved by the use of two distinct types and areas of matting with the initial mat being designed to remove grit/dirt and allowing it to fall away from the surface whilst the secondary matting removes moisture. Matting should cover the largest area possible and be of a good quality. The matting must be cleaned, maintained and replaced periodically as part of the ongoing maintenance programme for the floor. Specification It is important that the specification for a floor is designed correctly to take into account the expected level of traffic, ongoing maintenance and future possible restrictions with regards to refurbishment. The specification should also note – in addition to the product details and the number of applications to be made – information on the final grade of sanding required, advice on any special items such as staining or painting and an indication of the quantity of product required. Information on suitable Bonakemi Maintenance Products specifications is noted in the appropriate data sheets. Bonakemi Maintenance Products Maintenance Bonakemi Maintenance Products Maintenance can be broadly divided into two areas, Commercial and Domestic. In both areas the aims are essentially identical. The floor surface should be clean and look as good as possible. The following information is designed to provide a starting point for the preparation of a maintenance programme. All floors will require individual assessment as the factors affecting them will vary. In addition to this variations will occur due to other influences such as changes in traffic levels, seasonal changes caused by weather i.e. additional matting to absorb moisture may be needed during periods of heavy rain, snow or changes in the use of the room. Commercial Dust/grit should be removed on a daily basis using a vacuum cleaner, scissor mop or other dry cleaning method. A machine based cleaning system using either a scrubber/drier or a spray buff system is the most suitable method for cleaning large floors or those subject to high traffic levels. Parkett Cleaner, diluted as appropriate, together with a soft cleaning pad is suitable for this process. A more aggressive cleaning pad, such as a red pad, may be used if deemed necessary i.e. in very high traffic areas or in areas where normal cleaning appears unable to remove all of the dirt etc from the floor surface. It should be noted however that excessive use of very aggressive pads may dull the lacquer or physically damage the surface. The effectiveness of the cleaning process must be closely monitored in the early stages and adjustments made to the frequency and type of cleaning to ensure that the floor is being maintained properly. Stubborn marks from shoes or other sources occasionally may not be removed by the normal cleaning regime. These may be removed using either Parkett Polish Remover or white spirit on a cloth. Domestic Domestic floors should be cleaned regularly using dry cleaning methods such as a vacuum cleaner or soft broom. Parkett Cleaner can be used as directed to clean the floor as required. N.B. Keep the amount of moisture used on the floor to a minimum by ensuring that cloths and mops are only lightly dampened. Protection/restoration of the floor finish can be achieved in two ways. The regular application of Freshen Up will restore the surface by “removing” scratches and wear patterns. Alternatively maintenance polishes, such as Parkett Polish or similar, may be used to protect the surface of the laquer. These products must be applied in accordance with the appropriate data sheet and care taken to avoid over application of the material. It is important to note that floors treated on a regular basis using a polish, “maintainer”, “gloss builder” or similar must be sanded back to bare wood prior to the application of further coats of lacquers. Refurbishment Periodically it will be necessary to refinish previously lacquered floors. Floors maintained using Parkett Cleaner or a similar neutral cleaner can be carefully sanded to provide a physical key, remove scratch marks and additional applications of lacquer applied as required. Floors treated with Freshen Up can be cleaned with Polish Remover to remove the Freshen Up and then be treated in a similar manner. The optimum method for this type of operation is to use the BonaSand Scrad system to prepare the floor. Regular applications of lacquer will significantly reduce the downtime caused by refurbishment and ensure that the floor is kept looking at it’s best at all times. In many instances it is feasible to consider carrying out this operation over night which can be extremely important in a commercial environment. If information is not available as to the maintenance products previously used on the floor it is recommended that in all cases a trial application is made on a small area to test the adhesion of the lacquer. An area of the floor should be sanded by hand, cleaned and a coat of lacquer applied. After several days the adhesion may be checked by gently scratching the surface using the milled edge of a coin.
